You may benefit from multifocal contact lenses if you require a different prescription for distance vision and a different prescription for near vision. This is a result of what is called presbyopia, which affects everyone over a certain age. It is a Greek word which translates into “old eye”, it’s not a flattering translation but it is part of the human condition.
Multifocal contact lenses work very differently to multifocal spectacle lenses. A balance needs to be struck between distance and near vision. This is where it is critical to discuss the needs and expectations of the individual patient. We can prescribe multifocal corrections using a variety of different lenses including:
- Standard Soft Contact Lenses
- Rigid, Hybrid or Soft Specialty Lenses
- Orthokeratology Lenses
Even if you wear glasses most the time, multifocal contact lenses are very popular for occasional wear for things like gym, sports and social occasions.
We find a lot of patients have been told in the past that their prescription did not suit multifocal contact lenses, this is often outdated or inaccurate advice. Being specialty contact lens practitioners we usually have access to a wider range of lenses, plus lens technology is always improving over time.
